Lola Forgeois
Autumn 2025 Study Abroad student from IMT Mines Alès
Alès, France

Hi! My name is Lola Forgeois. I’m from France, and I’m currently studying a Master of Engineering Management at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). My home university is IMT Mines Alès, where I completed my engineering degree in civil engineering.
What made me pick UTS to undertake a study abroad or exchange experience?
I chose UTS for my study abroad experience because of the strong partnership with my home university, IMT Mines Alès, which made the administrative process much easier. I was also very interested in the opportunity to complete a double degree in Engineering Management. Studying at UTS allows me to improve my English in an immersive environment, while discovering Australia — a beautiful and diverse country that I’ve always wanted to explore.
What has been my favourite aspect of the Study Abroad or Exchange program?
My favourite aspect of the Study Abroad program has been meeting people from all over the world. At the beginning, UTS organised lots of events and parties, which were perfect to connect with other international students. Over time, I’ve built strong friendships with people from many different countries. I also really enjoy how the program allows me to grow both personally and academically in a new environment — learning to adapt, be more independent, and discover new perspectives.
What are the benefits of cultural awareness from a career perspective?
From a career perspective, cultural awareness is a real asset, especially because I want to work internationally. Studying abroad is a great opportunity to develop this skill. Australia is a very multicultural country, so living and studying here has allowed me to experience different ways of thinking and working. By learning from others’ backgrounds and experiences, I now have a better idea of where I might want to live and work in the future. It has also helped me become more adaptable and open-minded — both essential qualities in today’s global job market.
What extra-curricular programs or activities have I been participating in through the Study Abroad or Exchange program?
During my exchange at UTS, I’ve joined several clubs and activities, including the Run Club, the gym, the pool, and photography sessions. These have been great ways to meet people and feel part of the student community. Outside of campus, I’ve also discovered surfing for the first time, explored Sydney, and visited places like the Blue Mountains. These experiences have made my exchange both active and unforgettable.
How does studying at UTS compare to my home university’s way of teaching? What makes UTS different?
In France, I studied at an engineering school where we had a very structured program, with a lot of content and close academic supervision. At UTS, the approach is quite different — it’s more flexible, with fewer contact hours but much more focus on independent learning. This shift has been a great experience, as it taught me to be more autonomous and take more responsibility for my own learning. UTS also offers excellent support services, such as help with CVs, cover letters, and career advice, which I found very useful.
What’s the most interesting thing I’ve learned about Australian culture?
One thing that really surprised me about Australian culture — especially in Sydney — is how clean the city is and how friendly and tolerant people are. Everyone’s super polite and always ready to help. Oh, and the birds! You can be walking in the middle of the city and see colourful parrots or hear the weirdest bird sounds ever — it’s like living in a zoo sometimes, but in a good way!
What’s my number one piece of advice for students keen to join the Study Abroad or Exchange program?
My number one piece of advice is: Go to the events, talk to people even if your English isn’t perfect, explore as much as you can, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The time goes by so fast — make the most of every opportunity!
