  1. Introduce myself: name, where I’m from, what degree I study, my home university

My name is Lorenz Demarta and I am French. And no, I am not from Paris, but from Lyon, which is also a very beautiful city !! I am currently studying for a general engineering degree at ECAM Lyon and, as a fourth-year student, I was lucky enough to be able to choose a very rich destination for my semester abroad. Indeed, Sydney is a city that shines with its landscapes and diverse culture.

  1. What made me pick UTS to undertake a study abroad or exchange experience

There were several reasons why I chose UTS. First of all, this university is recognized worldwide and has a very good international ranking. In addition, the facilities seemed very attractive to me, and I have not been disappointed. And of course, I was particularly excited about the experience of living in such a distant country and such a cosmopolitan city.

  1. What has been my favourite aspect of the Study Abroad or Exchange program?

I think what I liked most was the openness that this experience gave me. Meeting people from completely different backgrounds really shook me up, and discovering a city like Sydney was an incredible experience.

  1. What are the benefits of cultural awareness from a career perspective?

I think it facilitates smooth communication when working with international teams. Being aware of cultural differences is key to moving an engineering project forward. I also think it gives you a global view of industrial and societal issues, which is a major asset in engineering and management.

  1. What extra-curricular programs or activities have I been participating in through the Study Abroad or Exchange program?

I found that UTS offers a wide range of activities. There is a lot to choose from, and I decided to sign up for the UTS gym, which is fully equipped.

  1. How does studying at UTS compare to my home university’s way of teaching? What makes UTS different?

What has definitely changed is that UTS has shifted its teaching model to mostly online courses (although labs are still in person), and I personally prefer being in person so I can meet other students. However, I must note that I like the increased autonomy that this mode of operation offers compared to the French system I am used to. In addition, the classrooms are very modern and the facilities are huge !

  1. What’s the most interesting thing I’ve learned about Australian culture?

The obsession with “mate” : here, everyone calls you “mate,” from the bus driver to the professor! This reflects the spirit of mutual support and equality that you feel every day.

  1. What’s my number one piece of advice for students keen to join the Study Abroad or Exchange program?

Dare to step out of your comfort zone : go out, join clubs during your first week, and meet new people. By immersing yourself right away, you'll get the most out of the experience, and believe me, it goes by too fast!
