During the study vacation (StuVac), I went on a trip to Tasmania with four other students from
all around the world. In this short report, I’ll tell you about one of the best trips I’ve ever been on.
First Stop: Frenchman’s Cap
Frenchman’s Cap is one of the most famous summits in Tasmania. As it is known for its great
hike and breathtaking views, it was definitely on our bucket list. We started on Sunday afternoon and made our way to the Vera hut, 15 kilometres away. As the summit ascent takes between 3 and 5 days, we were equipped with backpacks, camping stoves, tents, and plenty of food. We planned to complete the route in 3 days. After 5 hours and some meters of elevation, we made it to the hut, cooked pasta and played UNO. Since there were enough free spots in the hut, there was no need to set up the tents.
On the second day we got up early and reached the second hut, Tahune hut, after a lot of meters of elevation. The conditions were really rough, but we still had a lot of fun. On the same day, we also wanted to attempt the summit. The logbook said that nobody had managed this for over 2 weeks. After 100 metres, there was already snow on the hiking trail. The further we got, the more snow and fog there was. Shortly before the summit, we had to stop as it became too dangerous and returned to the hut.
On the third day, the weather was much better and we set off on the 23km walk back to the car park. We returned in high spirits and set off by car to the next camp spot.
Second Stop: Maria Island
Next, we took the ferry to Maria Island, a small island not far from the coast. After doing the
Bishop and Clerk Hike on the island in the afternoon and enjoying the beautiful views, we set
up our tents. On the island there are a lots of Wombats and Kangaroos and we were able to
experience a bit of Australian wildlife.
Third Stop: Hobart
Before heading back to Sydney, we visited Hobart and the MONA Museum on the last day.
Even for non-museum people, this is a unique experience and definitely worth a visit.
Tasmaina has really beautiful nature and is perfect for outdoor activities. I would definitely
come back again.
