My Semester Abroad at UTS: Why It Was the Best Decision I Ever Made

Tim Hauser

Autumn 2025 Study Abroad student from HWZ Hochschule für Wirtschaft

Zurich, Switzerland

When I first landed in Sydney, I didn’t expect this city to shape me the way it did. Coming from a small town in Switzerland, I was overwhelmed – in the best way possible – by the size, energy, and diversity of this metropolis. What followed were a few of the most meaningful months of my life.

Finding My People Through Bouldering

One of the best things I did was joining the UTS Bouldering Society. It didn’t take long until the climbing gym became my second home. Not only did I fall in love with the sport, but I also met some of the most amazing and supportive people. The community made me feel welcome right away and gave me an authentic connection to fellow UTS students.

Surfing, Cycling & Sydney Sunsets

Sydney gave me the space and time to try new things and revisit old passions. I learned to surf – something I had never imagined doing before. It became part of my weekly routine and something I’ll deeply miss once I’m back home.

I also bought a road bike here after selling my one back in Switzerland. With the help of a local bike shop and a mechanic who I now consider a friend, I rebuilt the bike of my dreams. Cycling through Centennial Park, having deep conversations mid-ride, and experiencing the freedom of open roads – it all helped me recharge and prepare mentally for life after the exchange.

Living Close to the Botanical Gardens

I was lucky to live in an apartment near the Botanical Gardens. Waking up and having that green space just around the corner was something I cherished daily. Sydney’s blend of city and nature is simply unique. The skyline, the beaches, and even the chaos of the CBD – I loved every part of it.

Hiking the Blue Mountains& Camper Vans

One of my most memorable day trips was hiking in the Blue Mountains. The view over the dense eucalyptus forest was breathtaking, and it reminded me just how vast and untouched Australia still is in many parts. It was the perfect moment of peace and reflection.

During the semester break, I took the chance to travel. I went on a road trip from Perth to Denmark (Western Australia, not Europe!). Sleeping in a campervan, exploring remote beaches, and soaking in Australia’s wild beauty – it was the adventure I didn’t know I needed.

Final Thoughts

Coming to Sydney for my exchange semester was hands down the best decision I’ve ever made. I grew as a person, built friendships, challenged myself, and collected memories that will stay with me forever. If you’re reading this and considering UTS – don’t hesitate. Pack your bags. Say yes. It will be worth it.
