Hello! My name is Pierre, a 22-year-old engineering student from ESILV in Paris, currently on an exchange program at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Australia. My background includes a rigorous CPGE at Buffon in Paris, and I'm now diving into this enriching international experience, which has been nothing short of transformative.

Why Australia?

Australia has always been a dream destination, so when the opportunity to study here arose, I didn’t hesitate. Studying in such a vast, diverse country—so far from home—offers a unique perspective on education, culture, and lifestyle. UTS, with its urban, sprawling campus in central Sydney, provides the perfect backdrop for this journey as I experience student life in a dynamic international setting.

Academic Life at UTS

At UTS, I’ve been taking classes in English, including subjects like Project Management and IT Professional and Society. One of the biggest surprises has been the workload balance—around fifteen hours of classes per week, supplemented by collaborative projects with local and international peers. The structure here is very organized; each subject outlines exam formats and key dates from the start, making it easier to manage.

Building Connections

The university made it easy for international students to connect, hosting events where we could meet others and integrate smoothly. I even joined the ski and surf club, which, apart from organizing trips, also brings students together for social gatherings. This has been a fantastic way to make friends and immerse myself in the local culture.

A Typical Day Down Under

My daily routine blends academics and leisure. Mornings often start at the university gym, followed by volleyball at Bondi Beach with friends. Classes are typically scheduled later, so I have plenty of time to balance studies and social activities. Living in a shared house in Petersham, a short commute from campus, has been convenient and adds to the experience.

Exploring Beyond the Classroom

Beyond Sydney, I’ve been lucky to explore other incredible destinations, from the pristine beaches of Fiji to the rugged beauty of the East Coast, and even adventures in Indonesia and the Philippines. Sydney itself is full of vibrant spots—the beaches, zoos, museums, and nightlife offer endless things to do and see.

Looking Forward

Reflecting on this exchange, I realize how much I’ve grown personally and academically. For those contemplating a similar journey, my advice is simple: go for it. You’ll return with unforgettable memories and a broadened perspective on life and career
