Your future favourite places for catching sunsets in Sydney!

Hi everyone! My name is Anna and I am a Study Abroad Student from Germany. I am studying Business Law at the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz (South of Germany) and exchanged my room with a view on the Swiss Alps for a room in Sydney Central! As you will see in a minute, I cannot complain. The last couple of months have been outstanding and the semester abroad in Sydney has been one of the best experiences in my life so far! Not only because of the people you meet here but also because of the different things you can do and see together around Sydney.

The first look from the plane was incredible – it was sunset time in Sydney and from this moment on I started to catch sunsets wherever I was. Therefore, I want to give you an insight of Sydney’s best – and often free-of-charge – places to watch sunsets and spend an unforgettable time with your (newly made) friends!

My most favourite place in Sydney (not only for watching sunsets!) is the Dudley Page Reserve, which is not far away from Bondi Beach. Just catch the train from Central to Bondi Junction and a further bus to Dover Heights (Military Rd near Weonga Rd). Make sure to take friends, some picnic and your camera with you! The view of the city from up there is just breathtakingly beautiful.

Another beautiful free-of-charge point to watch sunsets from is Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and all along the promenade. You can shot the impressively Opera House with the Harbour Bridge in the back. A short walk from Circular Quay through the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens will take you there.

In the Autumn semester it is really nice to climb up the 200 stairs of the South East Pylon of the Harbour Bridge at about 4 pm to catch the “golden hour” of Sydney. The so called Pylon Lookout (87m above mean sea level) offers you an amazing view of the skyline and the Opera House from above and is worth the $10 entrance fee (student concession)! Just be aware that during the winter months doors are closing at 5 pm.

If the Pylon Lookout was not enough and you are not afraid of heights you can enjoy the most beautiful sunset over Sydney from above! From the Sydney Tower Eye (309 metres in total) you can see the final dusk. Tip: if you book in advance online (at least one day earlier), it is only about $14!

You can also get one of the best views of the skyline and the harbour bridge at sunset time from the ferry. If you spend a day in Manly or Watsons Bay make sure to take the ferry back to Circular Quay and enjoy the stunning view! Especially on a Sunday it is very cheap to go by ferry – just $2,60.

I hope your are going to enjoy Sydney and especially its sunsets as much as I did!
